I'm a co-founder of
Wikia. We're hosting, supporting, maintaining, and developing almost 4000 wikis in 70 different languages, including many of the world's largest community-created wikis such as encyclopedias of
Star Wars and
Star Trek, the
Marvel Database Project, the
Psychology Wiki, the Wikipedia parody
Uncyclopedia, and guides to all the best games including
World of Warcraft,
Final Fantasy XI,
EverQuest II, and
GuildWars.
I am chair of the
Advisory Board of the
Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organisation responsible for
Wikipedia,
Wikibooks,
Wikinews, the
Commons, and the other
Wikimedia projects. Prior to this, I was an elected trustee of the Wikimedia Foundation. I am a member of Wikimedia's
Communications Committee and the Foundation's press contact for Australia. I have been a volunteer editor at Wikipedia since February 2003.
I contributed a chapter on managing wikis to the book
Wikis: Tools for information Work and Collaboration which was edited by Jane Klobas and published by Chandos, Oxford in June 2006. An Italian version was published in 2007 under the title
Oltre Wikipedia.
I've given
presentations about wikis in ten countries to groups ranging from student activists to corporate audiences. I also serve as a member of the program committee for
Wikimania and as Posters and Demos Chair for
WikiSym.
My background before wikis was in psychology. I previously worked as an educational researcher and developer of student assessments.
I'm originally from
East Anglia and moved to Australia in 2005.
