Tor is often blocked from editing due to its use by vandals. This presents a problem for Wikipedia users in mainland China, who often can't edit Wikipedia by normal methods.

[edit] HTTPS Connection
One possible solution is to use Wikimedia's HTTPS gateway. This is not a privacy solution—any edits you make will be immediately visible, and anyone with access to the network, such as the Chinese Government, will be able to correlate your edits with your IP address. It is not much better than ordinary HTTP for privacy, the difference is that it works for the time being.
NOTE: As of July 2007, these links don't work in China, but they might become accessible again. Please give feedback on the talk page. Thank you.
The SSL based URLs for Wikipedia are:
If you find yourself blocked due to using Tor IPs, disable proxying for SSL in your browser configuration. This will reveal your IP address to Wikipedia and to anyone sniffing packets on a network along your route.
[edit] Closed proxy
A group of Wikipedia editors have set up several closed proxy servers that can be used by editors normally blocked from editing by the Chinese firewall. Users who wish to use one of these proxies to edit can find more information at the WikiProject on closed proxies.
[edit] Softblocks
Tor proxies can be "soft-blocked" so logged-in account users can edit via a Tor connection; however, Wikipedia administrators often refuse to do so citing the policy on open proxies. The list of current soft-blocked Tor proxies offers a limited means of bypassing the current mixture of blocks.
[edit] Need an account & Tor won't let you create one?
Ask someone outside of mainland China to set you up with an account and then email the username / password (account creation and the ordinary request process are blocked from tor proxies due to vandalism issues). You should immediately change the password after logging in.
